These machines are used in preparing a firm base for retaining walls, concrete slabs, asphalt, and paving stone installations. They use a combination of weight and vibration to rattle loose gravel materials closer together into a dense mass with few air pockets. For best compaction, a non-organic media must be used such as road base or driveway chip.

A light misting of the compaction media prior to compaction will keep dust to a minimum and further aid in compaction. These units will effectively compact 4" of material. To compact deeper amounts, do so in 4" lifts, whereby 4" is compacted before another loose layer is placed over top. The material is completely compacted when the machine begins to bounce slightly. It will take multiple passes over the same area to accomplish complete compaction.

We carry everything from heavy-duty 21" x 26" plate compactors by Stone and Multiquip to 10" x 10" manual hand tampers for smaller jobs around the home.

Basically, there are forward plate compactors and reversible plate compactors. Reversible plate compactors are suitable for the compaction of sand and gravel, crushed aggregate as well as mixed soils with some cohesive content. Ideal for trenches and backfilling along foundations where forward and reverse operation is required. Units are enclosed in tubular steel frames with lift eyes. Steering handles are vibration isolated for operator comfort and can be folded for tight turns.
