For screws, do the following:
1. Make sure the screws are set slightly below the surface. Run the taping knife over the screw - if it does not touch any part of the screw, it is OK.
2. Place a small amount of mud over the screw, and use a taping knife to scrape off all mud except for what is filling the depression.
3. After this dries, scrape off any mud sticking up before applying more so you have a level surface. You will notice that the mud will shrink in a bit.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 a few times until the mud no longer shrinks in. Try to scrape well after each coat. You shouldn't have to sand much at all when done.
